personable because it's an acting job. i haven't made money at it because it's my hobby and my life. maybe one day i will make money at it. i'm not going to stop doing something i love. >> our mentor went through three days of auditions in austin, texas, and says he would do it all over again. thanks so much for joining us tonight. here's brian bolter with the news edge at 11:00. we begin with a tragedy that left a family from maryland dead. the family hoping to build a new life was killed in an instant. the family was from gaithersburg moving back to california when they were killed in a fiery crash in western nebraska sunday. tonight we're learning more about the family and the new life they hoped to build. fox 5's maureen umeh starts off the news edge. >> christopher and diana schmidt were moving back home to sacramento where they grew up, fell in love and had their two boys. diana was 30 weeks pregnant with their third son. it was supposed to be the start of a new chapter in their

lives, but it ended before it even began. more risk tragedy unfolding on a western -- horrific tragedy unfolding on a western nebraska highway, two cars burned beyond recognition, a family of five killed in an instant. neighbors are in shock. >> the whole family, even the dogs and the cat. i mean it's terrible. >> reporter: christopher schmidt, his wife diana who was seven months pregnant with the little boy the couple was going to name ethan, their sons 3- year-old samuel and 2-year-old connor all gone. >> from the impact to the explosion there's no way they even knew what happened. >> reporter: brad bowman is diana's father. we spoke with him by phone from his sacramento home. he says he takes some comfort knowing his family didn't suffer. >> two things there, that they went instantaneously hoefully not even feeling anything -- hopefully not even feeling anything to all five souls going at once.

>> reporter: chris an air force veteran had moved the family to maryland to take a civil service job with the department of energy. they stayed a year living in this gaithersburg apartment complex where they are remembered fondly. >> she was a very nice lady, the family, everybody. >> reporter: the schmidts wanted to get back to their roots in sacramento and were making the move in two cars, diana and the boys in the 2007 toyota corolla, chris in a 2010 ford mustang. the couple was using walkie- talkies to communicate. both cars were stopped waiting for authorities to clean up a fatal wreck involving two semi trailer trucks on interstate 80 in nebraska when another tractor trailer slammed chris' mustang from behind pushing the mustang into the toyota carrying diana and the two little boys. the toyota crashed into a truck in front of it. both cars burst into flames. >> from the impact to the explosion there was no way they even knew what happened. >> reporter: the driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with four counts of

manslaughter. bowman says his family is trying to come to terms with what's happened trying to make sense of the loss of five beautiful lives in such a tragic way. a memorial service will be held next monday in sacramento and the schmidt family memorial fund has been set up. if you would like to contribute, we have a link on our website www.myfoxdc.com. >> a heartbreaking situation. developing news now, still no suspect or motive in the shooting death of a central high school student. marckel ross was gunned down on old central avenue on his way to class. dozens gathered for a vigil in his honor tonight. fox 5's audrey barnes here with more. >> it is a tragic start to the school year at central high school, one of the brightest students there gunned down at 6:50 in the morning on his way to class. parents packed the auditorium at the capitol heights school to get the latest on the investigation. detectives don't have a lot to go on but are checking everything out.

as he was led into court today. mitchell is currently homeless. he has an extensive criminal record in both virginia and west virginia. day four of the chicago teachers strike and many students are ready to go back to school. in fact, some varsity athletes are worried they'll lose playoff and championship opportunities and maybe even miss out on scholarships if they can't take to the field. the chicago teachers union has not been able to strike a deal with city officials, at least not yet. still ahead art for everyone, a new mural is unveiled at one of the city's most popular landmarks. we'll take you there. >> i think everybody will like the weekend. there could be some areas of fog tomorrow morning. th should burn off quickly and we'll let you know if we'll get any showers out of that forecast. >> check out the rundown. we're back.

degrees. you can see a big drop in temperature here. the high temperature today in st. louis was 88, but in wichita 63. here's where our front boundary is. this is the front that will move through our area about this time tomorrow night. what it will, do not only does it cloud us up a bit tomorrow afternoon, but it will probably bring a few showers in our direction. tonight we've still got clear skies. i can see some of the high thin clouds starting to develop over w of with and a few high thin milky clouds will be -- west virginia and a few milky clouds will be over our area. there will be a few spots in the 50s tonight and the suburbs definitely will head down to the 50s overnight but probably not as chilly as last night and a little fog could be around later tonight. mainly clear otherwise with the exception of patchy fog in some areas, 50s in the suburbs, 63 degrees for the district, light winds. tomorrow sun with afternoon clouds, temperature 83, but

again i'm expecting the day to be d. 8 a.m. 67, noon 79 degrees, a lot of sunshine, some clouds by 5:00. we'll lose a little sunshine there but warm enough to get up to 83 degrees tomorrow and still sunny enough, 82 quantico, 76 annapolis, baltimore about 79 and martinsburg, i expect your high temperature to come in right around 80 degrees. we want to show you the weekend manner. we've got this front that will come through. it looks like most of the action is overnight and not much action. i think the front will run out of moisture. saturday maybe an early morning cloud, but i think sun will break through and a temperature of 78 degrees with a refreshing breeze out of the northwest. sunday about the same temperature, but we start out sunny and might cloud up later at night. that's from a system that will be developing down to the gulf coast that might start moving toward our area for monday. the weekend now looks really good, so nice that maybe you're tempted to take advantage of ocean city this weekend.
